What are Veneers?

Doubtless, you have heard of dental veneers. You may even know someone with veneers whether you realise it or not. Cosmetic veneers are intended to be discreet so that others don’t notice them, but you still benefit from the aesthetic improvements.

Veneers are thin polymer strips that bond permanently to the labial (front) surfaces of your teeth. While they can be fashioned from various materials, all dental veneers are intended to provide a “smile makeover” and can be a cost-effective method of resolving several cosmetic issues without needing to undergo multiple treatments. Your dentist can craft a set of veneers for you and have them in place in as few as one to three office visits.

The Veneers Process

Having veneers placed is a comfortable and minimally-invasive process. After a complete evaluation that may involve taking photographs or measurements of your teeth, your dentist will discuss your aesthetic goals and desires with you. You and your dentist will decide together if veneers are the correct solution for your situation.

Next, your dentist will need to “roughen” the surfaces of your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel. This preparation is needed to allow your new veneers to bond securely to your teeth. Your dentist will remove the minimum amount of enamel necessary in order to preserve your teeth. This process is not typically painful, but anesthetic may be available.

Now you are ready for your new cosmetic veneers. After the bonding is complete, you might have some teeth sensitivity for a few days. Speak with your dentist about over-the-counter pain relievers if necessary, but any discomfort should be quite manageable.

Your veneers are likely to last for several years. You can extend the life of your veneers by practicing good oral care and refraining from activities that could damage your veneers, including fingernail biting, consuming hard candy, and crunching ice.

How Can Veneers Help?

Many people call cosmetic veneers the “Hollywood smile” because they can instantly cover many aesthetic problems. Here are just a few examples:

Large Gaps between Teeth

A set of veneers will close up unsightly gaps between your front teeth for a more symmetric appearance.

Chipped Teeth

Veneers are an alternative to bonding or other cosmetic dental treatments for the repair of teeth that have become chipped.

Discolored Teeth

Whitening treatments can typically resolve normal teeth staining. However, severe discoloration may require further efforts. Veneers can cover even badly discolored teeth, giving you a set of pearly whites.

Of course, veneers can help with additional problems. Contact your dentist to learn more about what veneers can do for you.
