Why You Should be Using Mouthwash Daily

Most of us brush our teeth twice per day at a minimum. Some of us even go the extra step and floss daily, as we should. But how many of us use a good quality mouthwash or oral rinse every day? Here are some good reasons you should make an appropriate mouthwash part of your daily oral care routine if you haven’t already.

It Goes Where You Can’t

Brushing twice a day is a necessity for good oral care, but dentists are also constantly telling us to floss. That’s because even the best toothbrush and the most thorough brushing can’t reach everywhere, particularly between the teeth and below the gum lines. These areas then become a breeding ground for harmful, cavity-causing bacteria.

But even flossing doesn’t cover every space. That’s one reason why it’s a good idea to make use of an effective mouthwash. Since mouthwashes are liquid they can get in just about any nook and cranny, providing you with excellent protection. Only a professional cleaning at your dentist’s office can do a better job.

It Kills Harmful Bacteria

Sugar doesn’t actually cause cavities. It’s the harmful bacteria that feed off sugar that create caries, or cavities. Effective mouth rinses are antiseptic, meaning they kill bacteria. A couple of minutes of vigorous swishing after you brush and floss gets rid of bad bacteria and prevents their formation. That’s why mouthwash should be the last thing you put in your mouth before going to sleep at night.

It’s also bacteria that cause bad breath. Using an antiseptic mouthwash after brushing and flossing post breakfast will kill these germs and give you a fresh start to your day.

It Can Be Fun

All mouthwashes are mint, right? Not anymore. You have several flavour choices these days, so if you don’t care for mint, you’re in luck. Delicious berry, bubblegum, and citrus flavours are also available. So pick your favourite, and encourage your kids to use mouthwash too by letting them select a fun flavour.

Select the Right Mouthwash

All mouthwashes are not the same. Some are simply breath fresheners or whitening solutions and don’t contain any antiseptic properties. So how can you tell an effective mouthwash apart from the others? Look for the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) Seal. The CDA Seal lets you know that a product has been found to deliver a benefit to your oral health. If you still have questions, your dentist is an excellent source for recommendations.

There are also good antiseptic mouthwashes available that have teeth whitening properties as well. Look for “white”, “whitening”, or “anti-stain” on the label. You’ll also find effective rinses that are specially made for sensitive teeth.

Rinsing thoroughly twice daily only take four minutes out of your day and requires little effort on your part. All you have to do is swish and spit. So incorporate a good mouthwash into your daily oral hygiene regimen. You’ll prevent cavities, discourage gum disease, and even make your breath delightful.
